National Truth and Reconciliation Day falls on a Saturday this year, meaning Burnaby has altered schedules for Sept. 30, as well as Oct. 1 and 2.

Burnaby residents will still be able to use some local community and recreation centres this long weekend.

This, while the city recognizes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Saturday, Sept. 30, also known as Orange Shirt Day.

Some civic facilities will operate until regular weekend schedules, but will either be closed or open under altered operating hours on Monday, Oct. 2 as it's the day in-lieu of the statutory holiday.

A Burnaby city release confirms curbside collection for garbage and recycling will remain on its regular schedule.

Truth and Reconciliation Day was recognized in 2021 to honour the survivors and lives lost of the residential school system, as well as their families and Indigenous communities across the country.

B.C. officially made Sept. 30 a STAT in March earlier this year.

"The City of Burnaby is committed to actively working with the four host Nations on whose unceded territory the City of Burnaby is located," the city's statement reads, "including the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Peoples, as well as the urban Indigenous population who live in Burnaby, to advance reconciliation by building and maintaining positive relationships to meaningfully do this important work together — on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and all days."

  • Burnaby Public Library - all branches (Sept. 30 and Oct. 1)
