Burnaby council byelection: What you need to know before you vote

With general voting day just around the corner for Burnaby's city council byelection, the Burnaby NOW has compiled everything you need to prepare yourself when casting your ballot, including candidate information, where to vote, how to vote and what you need to vote. 

VOTING DAYS

WHO ARE THE CANDIDATES?

The Burnaby NOW has sent a questionnaire to all 14 candidates declared. Those who have responded with their answers are highlighted with a live link to their answers. 

Those who have not yet submitted responses will be updated once they are received. 

VOTING LOCATIONS

The current advance voting location is at Bill Copeland Sports Centre from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

General voting day is on June 26 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the following locations:

AM I ELIGIBLE TO VOTE?

You can vote in the byelection if you meet the following criteria:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Be a resident of B.C. for at least six months before voting day
  • Be a resident of Burnaby for at least 30 days before voting day
  • Not disqualified from voting by any statue or loaw

HOW DO I KNOW IF I'M EVEN ELIGIBLE TO VOTE?

WHAT I.D. SHOULD I BRING TO VOTE?

If you can vote, you should have received a voter card at the start of the month. 

You are asked to bring this card with you to a voting place, as it will increase the efficiency of your voting experience.

If you did not get a voter card or need to update your information, you are asked to bring two pieces of I.D. that prove your identity and residence, one of which must include your signature.

The following I.D. is considered acceptable: 

  • BC Care Card
  • BC Identification Card issued by ICBC
  • BC Services Card
  • BC Driver's License
  • Birth Certificate
  • Burnaby Public Library Card
  • Canadian Passport or Citizenship Card
  • Certificate of Indian Status
  • Credit or Debit Card
  • Income Tax Assessment
  • Metis Certificate Status
  • Monthly Report/Request for Continued Income Assistance
  • Nexus Border Card
  • Owner's Certificate of Insurance and Vehicle License issued by ICBC
  • Property Tax notice issued by the City of Burnaby
  • Social Insurance Card
  • Statutory Declaration/Sworn Affidavit (from a notary public, lawyer or commissioner for taking affidavits
  • Student Card
  • Utility bill (electricity, natural gas, water, telephone or cable services)

WHAT IF I NEED HELP SUBMITTING MY VOTE?

If you need a translator or other assistance with casting a ballot, you are encouraged to bring someone from your COVID-19 cohort with you to your voting lace of choice. 

They will have to sign a complete deceleration in order to provide you with support. 

The city says if you have trouble entering a voting place, you may ask to receive and mark your ballot outside (curbside voting). 

If you can't bring someone with you that can advise a presiding election official that you need help outside, a contact number will be available at the accessible parking stall, which will be clearly labelled.
