As Omicron continues to spread in B.C., Burnaby is seeing an increase in one category and a drop in another while the province struggles with testing capacity.

According to the latest update from the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) COVID-19 surveillance dashboard, case rates went down in Burnaby. Burnaby's four quadrants all saw a rise in positivity rate.

Testing across the province has been a struggle, as capacity has been extremely high or fully reached, which prompted health officials to ask the public to be conscious about if they really need a test or not.

Rapid tests are also being handed out at sites, with those in some health authorities who receive one being asked to self-report their result.

As cases and hospitalizations rise, long-term care homes in Burnaby, and its hospital, have seen large outbreaks.

As of this publication, five long-term facilities are under COVID-19 outbreak declarations including George Derby Centre, Dania Home, New Vista Care Centre, Chartwell Carlton Garden and AgeCare Harmony Court.

Fraser Health announced yesterday (Jan. 12) that an outbreak had been declared, with three units being affected.

Admissions are temporarily closed in a surgical unit, acute care elders unit and a medicine unit.

Case rates are new cases per 100,000 people by local health area and community health service area.
