Burnaby’s weekly COVID-19 cases continue to drop as part of an overall trend in B.C. but still remain high.

New COVID-19 cases in Burnaby hit 397 from April 18 to 24, the last reporting period by the BC Centre for Disease Control. That’s a drop from the 431 between April 11 and 17 and below the 475 registered between April 4 and 10, which was a new all-time record.

But the recent week is still more than the 366 new cases reported from March 28 to April 3 – which was a new record for Burnaby at the time.

Burnaby has seen cases remain above 200 for 10 consecutive weeks.

Burnaby saw 244 new infections between March 21 and 27 – more than the 210 new infections between March 14 and 20, but down slightly from the 246 new coronavirus cases from March 7 to 13. There were 203 new cases from Feb. 28 to March 6, 270 new cases from Feb. 21 to 27 and 243 cases from Feb. 14 to 20.

The previous weekly record for Burnaby was 341 cases from Dec. 6-12, 2020.

B.C. on April 28 set records for the most COVID-19 patients in hospitals, and in intensive care units (ICU), according to new provincial data.

The number of those hospitalized rose by a net total of 15 people, to 515, while the number of ICU patients rose by seven overnight, to 171. Five people are listed as having died from the disease in the past 24 hours, and it was not clear if they all had been in hospitals.

The new deaths raise the province's death toll from the disease to 1,576.

Of the 127,889 people known to have contracted COVID-19 in B.C. since the first case was detected in January, 2020, more than 92.3%, or 118,057 individuals are deemed by the province to have recovered.
