Residents of a Burnaby highrise woke up to a parking garage full of soaked vehicles Monday morning after a major flood in the building’s underground parking garage.
The Burnaby Fire Department got a call at just before 1 a.m. for a flood at 4118 Dawson St., according to assistant fire Chief Derek Masaro.
“They arrived to a highrise with a large water main break and found the source of the water problem in a locker room in the underground parking area,” he said.
The source of the flood was the main shut-off, according to Masaro, and firefighters were unable to get to it, so they contacted the City of Burnaby works yard to shut off water to the building.
Descriptions posted on Reddit said the ground shook “like an earthquake,” and there were loud water noises before the parking garage flooded quickly.
“It was literally minutes,” stated one post. “The pipe that burst was spewing ungodly amount of water. This is basically within the 30 - 60 mins. and also no alarms to alert residents and the fact that this happened at midnight. No way they could have known.”
Photos of the scene show a flooded stairwell and vehicles submerged past their headlights.
