New bikeways coming to South Burnaby: City wants feedback

The city is piloting new cycling infrastructure in Edmonds Town Centre from May to September.

The City of Burnaby is about to launch a four-month cycling pilot project in the Edmonds neighbourhood, and the city wants your feedback.

Beginning in May, residents and cyclists will be able to test new infrastructure and share their experiences with the city on the bike network improvements in the area.

Those improvements will include new bike paths and other projects along five corridors in Edmonds.

Phase 1 of the improvements in Edmonds include adding speed humps, traffic diversions, stencil pavement markings and new signage to neighbourhood bikeways on Mary Avenue, 16th Avenue, Britton Street and 15th Street, as well as a protected two-way bike lane on the south side of Kingsway connecting Highland Park Line Trail with the new neighbourhood bikeway along Britton Street.

The city describes bikeways as a road with low, slow traffic shared by cyclists and drivers.

Phase 1 also includes a multi-use path for anyone who cycles, walks or rolls on 15th Street between 13th and 11th avenues.

The city says the improvements will be designed to an “all ages and abilities” standard to keep cyclists physically separate from moving vehicles or slowing traffic volumes and speeds for safer cycling.

‘Quick build’ process

The city is constructing the bikeways in a “quick build” process, which means using low-cost and adjustable materials within the existing curb-to-curb space, according to the city’s website.

The quick builds can take anywhere from days to a few weeks to be constructed, the website states.

Phase 2 of the Edmonds town centre cycling network will include more construction of the network throughout the rest of 2023, using the community feedback received in Phase 1.

More updates on the project can be found on the city’s website.
