Numerous activities at Burnaby recreation facilities are suspended as a result of the latest public health orders issued for B.C. amid rising concerns of COVID-19's Omicron variant.
The city says the following amenities and activities will be suspended at all local facilities until Jan. 18, 2022:
- Fitness classes
- ie. Zumba, yoga, cycling and boxing for fitness classes
- Cardio equipment and weight rooms
- Dance classes and studios
A news release says as part of the new orders, visitors to public swimming polls are now required to present their B.C. vaccine card for entry.
"We continue to urge all Burnaby residents to follow all current provincial health orders, and get vaccinated as soon as possible," the city adds.
B.C. is struggling to contain the rapid transmission of the Omicron variant and Burnaby's numbers reflect the situation.
According to the latest Geographic Distribution of COVID-19 by Local Health Area of Case Residence numbers for Dec. 12 to 18, 2021, Burnaby recorded 179 new infections.
From Dec. 7 to 11, 2021, Burnaby was in just double digits with 69 cases identified.
The data is released by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).
Case and positivity rates for the region also saw large increases, nearly doubling from Dec. 13 to 19, 2021.
Case rates are new cases per 100,000 people by local health area and community health service area.
