If you saw a man with a hospital blanket draped over his shoulders near Kingsway and Barker Avenue in Burnaby Wednesday morning, police want to speak with you.

At about 8:30 a.m., the man ran onto Kingsway from the Shell gas station on the corner and was hit by a taxi, according to Burnaby RCMP.

The driver remained at the scene and talked to police.

At first, the man’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, according to a news release, but he has since taken a turn for the worse.

Investigators are now looking to talk to anyone who might be able to shed light on what led up to the man running onto the street, including anything that might have happened inside or outside of the nearby gas station that morning.

“We just want to know why? Why did he dart out onto the street, Kingsway of all places?” Burnaby RCMP spokesperson Mike Kalanj told the NOW.

The 36-year-old man is described as being 5-foot-6, 150 pounds and balding with a dark complexion and a full salt-and-pepper beard.

Police say he had had a white hospital blanket with blue stripes draped over his shoulders, but Kalanj said he didn’t know whether the man had been in the hospital.

“We just wanted to jog people’s memory,” he said of the blanket.

Burnaby RCMP’s criminal collision investigation team is investigating the incident.

Anyone with information or dashcam video in the area between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. is asked to call Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999.
