The host-Burnaby South Secondary Rebels are 1-1 after day one of the 16-team tournament at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.

Some of the best high school senior boys' soccer teams from around the province are in Burnaby this week.

The 2023 BC AAA boys' soccer provincial championships are underway at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West fields — located at 3677 Kensington Ave. — ending with the championship match Saturday morning, Nov. 25.

The 16-team event is hosted by Burnaby South Secondary, who boast a 1-1 record after the first day of the tournament on Thursday, Nov. 23.

The Rebels prevailed in their round-robin opener, shutting out Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary (Surrey) by a score of 2-0.

However, the black and yellow were held off the scoresheet themselves in their second match; a 2-0 loss to Reynolds Secondary (Victoria).

Burnaby South must win its third and final preliminary match against North Peace Secondary (Fort St. John) in hopes of advancing to the elimination stage of provincials.

The Rebels will face the Grizzlies at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 24, on Field #1 of the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.

South finished with a silver in Burnaby New Westminster Schools Athletic Association (BNWSAA) league play, falling to North 1-0 in the final.

They also claimed a bronze medal at Fraser North AAA district playoffs, earning a spot at provincials with a 1-0 victory over Dr. Charles Best Secondary (Coquitlam).

The Burnaby Lake Sports Complex also hosted the BC AA boys' provincial championships. Mulgrave Secondary (West Vancouver) won the banner from the three-day tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 22.
