Burnaby teens now have a chance to shape the way the city grows.

The City of Burnaby is seeking submissions from local teens in grades 9 to 12 to participate in a youth advisory council for Burnaby's Official Community Plan (OCP).

The advisory council will share youth priorities and values for the future to help city planners develop the OCP, according to a city press release.

The OCP will guide and manage Burnaby's growth over the next 25 years, including shaping policy around housing affordability and climate change.

Over three workshops between November 2023 and May 2024, passionate youth community builders will work with city staff and learn about city planning.

Members of the committee will get a recommendation letter from the city upon completing the program and an honorarium for participation.

Teens can apply on the city's website and are encouraged to submit "something easy, yet creative" like a short video, drawing, poem or photo series to show the city who they are and their personal connection to Burnaby (though it's not required).

The deadline for youth to apply is 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27.
