Great blue herons are one of the species up for "adoption" as part of Wildlife Rescue's Fur & Feathers adoption program, ready for holiday giving.

Stumped for gift-giving ideas for that hard-to-buy-for someone on your list?

You can help a Burnaby-based organization, rescue animals in need and tick that item off your list – all with a couple of clicks.

The Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. is inviting people to take part in its Fur & Feathers adoption program this holiday season.

The virtual "adoptions" are a tangible way to help one of the thousands of animals that require immediate assistance every year.

"Caring for wild animals is expensive; a single patient costs around $220 to care for," the association notes. "This cost includes natural, protein-rich foods, enrichment, heating pads and incubators, medications, supplements, expert care and health monitoring."

"Adopting" an animal on behalf of a friend or family member helps the association to continue its valuable work year-round. Among the animals up for adoption a variety of birds (Anna's hummingbirds, great blue herons, American robins, buffleheads, pileated woodpeckers) and everyone's favourite – bats.

Every adoption gets you an adoption certificate, species information and a charitable tax receipt. You can find all the details – and finish off your Christmas shopping – online at the organization's website.
