Three hospitalized in Burnaby motel blaze (video)

The motel was fully occupied

Three people were sent to hospital after an early-morning fire at a Burnaby motel on Saturday.

Just after 2 a.m. on Jan. 23, Burnaby firefighters responded to the 401 Inn Motel at 2950 Boundary Rd. for a fire.

When crews arrived, they found heavy fire coming from one unit on the second floor. A second alarm was called to bring in more firefighters to the scene to help fight the fire.

Multiple people were rescued by firefighters using ladders. Several ambulances attended the scene and paramedics treated five people at the scene and three of those were transported to hospital for smoke inhalation.

“It was chaotic when (firefighters) first arrived,” said Greg Young, an assistant fire chief with the Burnaby Fire Department.

The motel was fully occupied, said Young, and was evacuated. Efforts are underway to allow more of the guests back into the motel later today, Young said.
