Trippy new vortex mural transforms this Burnaby art gallery

The mural is an homage to 1960s modernist architecture, inspired by early video artists.

Deer Lake Gallery's cozy home has an abstract new look: a black-and-white spiral vortex celebrating the architectural heritage of the modernist ’60s house.

The design by Paul Wong was created by pointing a live camera back onto a video screen, which generated a feedback loop that created the spirals, according to Wong's website.

The vortex was an experimental technique explored by early video artists in the 1960s, Wong said.

The work is called ART HOUSE SWIRL, installed by muralist Col Urrutia, and it's a temporary long-term art piece in honour of Wong's first video art exhibition at the Burnaby Art Gallery in 1974.

Fifty years later, you can watch that installation Earthworks in Harmony at the official debut of ART HOUSE SWIRL and toast the revitalization of the Burnaby Arts Council.

The reception will include the unveiling of a second parkside mural by Lay Hoon and an auction of Burnaby-raised Jay Cabalu's hand-cut collage Groundhog Day.

Burnaby Arts Council has used the city-owned building at 6584 Deer Lake Ave. for more than 20 years, according to a city staff report.
