Reckless ratrunners have their day ruined by Burnaby RCMP

On Thursday, I wrote about how Burnaby RCMP nailed a group of drivers risking the lives of children by speeding through school zones.

They were just getting warmed up.

The local RCMP’s traffic enforcement unit staged another blitz on school and playground zones on Thursday. In just three hours of enforcement, police nailed 45 reckless drivers.

Five speeding tickets were handed out in the area around Capitol Hill Elementary.

But the big enchilada came at a playground zone.

A whopping 40 tickets were handed out at a playground zone on Springer Avenue at Beecher Park (the Burnaby RCMP actually tweeted it as “Beach” park, but that’s an easy mistake) – I grew up just a few blocks from there and know it well.

That stretch of Springer is downhill and people use it as a ratrunner route between Lougheed Highway and Parker Street or Hastings. I hate ratrunners because they drive like maniacs compared with area residents who drive these roads.

People, nothing you are doing is that important to speech through a playground zone. People often forget that it’s not just school zones that are 30 km/h. Kids play around these areas – hence the name “playground.”

You need to slow down so you don’t kill a child. Imagine living the rest of your life knowing you did something like that. It’s important to take a breath and think about that before you get behind the wheel.

It’s part of the whole being-an-adult gig.

Sorry to be such a scold, but clearly people aren’t getting the message. Let’s put the Burnaby RCMP’s traffic unit out of business.
