Editor:
I’ve been reading some of the letters recently written by women who live in the Metrotown area and I want to add my perspective.
I walk a lot and the daytime is OK around the Metrotown area, but I will no longer walk in the neighbourhood at night if I can avoid because there are too many creeps who will literally follow me for blocks and say inappropriate things.
The problem is that I don’t drive and I take the SkyTrain to work. This is one of the reasons why I moved so closed to a station. During the winter, it’s dark before I even get off work so when I leave the Metrotown station and walk past the religious people yelling disgusting things I am then forced to walk in the dark to get home.
Too often I have had men following me trying to pick me up. They can be relentless and they think it’s a joke. I’ve had other people tug at my purse like they’re going to snatch it away.
Seriously, we need more cops walking a beat in Metrotown to deal with all of the creeps, homeless and mentally ill people who make life difficult for women.
Women deserve to feel safe on our local streets and I shouldn't have to uproot my life to move elsewhere just to not be afraid of the dark.
