Burnaby records fewer than 500 new COVID-19 infections during latest reporting period

COVID-19 cases still lingering in Fraser Health.

Latest provincial data shows Burnaby recorded fewer than 500 new COVID-19 infections during the latest reporting period. 

According to Geographic Distribution of COVID-19 by Local Health Area of Case Residence for Jan. 16 to 22, 2022, Burnaby saw 498 new cases recorded.

Surrey continues to hold the highest total with 1,449.

According to the latest Long-Term Care, Assisted Living and Independent Living Facilities report released on Jan. 28, 2022, the facility has seen a total of 36 cases since the outbreak was declared on Jan. 4, 2022. 

The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) says the data is current as of Jan. 25, 2022. 

Fraser Health said they proactively implemented the following measures at the site: 

  • Staffing levels are being supported to maintain resident care
  • Social visits are restricted in the affected areas of the facility. Essential visits can continue
  • Staff and residents movement in the affected areas of the facility has been modified to minimize exposure to others
  • Cleaning and infection control measures have been further enhanced
  • Residents, families and staff are being notified
  • Twice a day screening of all staff and residents is taking place
  • Additional testing and screening is in place to support monitoring of disease control

George Derby Centre was subject to an outbreak on Nov. 8, 2021, when there were 10 confirmed cases. 

The outbreak included 24 cases involving 16 residents and eight staff members. One death was also recorded. 

In November of 2020, the centre endured a tragic outbreak with 36 lives lost among 109 confirmed infections.

In a Jan. 27 statement,  Fraser Health said thanks to the implementation of "comprehensive strategies," there are no longer outbreaks at the site. 

The outbreak was declared on Jan. 12, 2022, when evidence of transmission had been discovered across three wards including three cases involving patients in a surgical unit, eight patients in an acute care elders unit and two patients in a medicine unit. 

The affected units were temporarily closed to admissions.
