Historical transit society hosting garage sale in Burnaby

Get ready for a transit-themed treasure trove.

This weekend, enthusiasts can delight in a transit-themed treasure trove – a garage sale of historic transportation memorabilia.

You can get your hands on vintage transit items for a steal of a deal as the non-profit Transit Museum Society hosts its first, cash-only garage sale on Sunday, Nov. 6.

It will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the society's current warehouse at 8560 Roseberry Ave. in Burnaby, unit 6, in the same parking lot as United Flower Growers.

“When we say garage sale, we really mean ‘garage sale,’” said the Transit Museum Society’s head volunteer for sales and memorabilia, Sue Walker.

Items for sale will include bus destination rolls – long rolls from the front of the bus displaying the route destination.

Walker said rolls for sale will include destinations from around B.C., with most of them from around Vancouver, and some from the surrounding suburbs.

The destination rolls will be sold for $150 at the Sunday garage sale.

Some rolls can be about 40 feet long – as long as the buses themselves, according to Walker.

Smaller destination rolls from the sides of buses will also be for sale.

All proceeds from the sale will go towards the fully volunteer-run non-profit, which restores and preserves historical transit vehicles from around B.C. and their history.

The society hosts events and rides on the buses at certain times throughout the year.

“We feel that transportation’s part of everybody’s childhood – we all have a memory of some sort of a bus,” Walker said.

Bus stop signs will also be for sale, going for $30.

Transfer kits, including a metal transfer cutter, vintage transfer tickets and a driver’s punch, which Walker said are popular with teachers, will go for $30.

Other memorabilia for sale include destination roll holders, steering wheels and miscellaneous bus parts (like a sidestep going on to a bus and dome lights), and bus-related books.

Two vintage buses will also be present at the sale, though you won’t be able to go inside.

The society is moving from its Burnaby location on Roseberry to Langley this month.
