Heavy snow covers Simon Fraser University's (SFU) Burnaby Campus on Jan. 18, 2024.

Simon Fraser University's (SFU) men's basketball team will get an extra night's rest before seeking its first conference win of the 2023-24 campaign.

The Red Leafs' athletics department has postponed tonight's, Jan. 18, home match against University of Alaska-Fairbanks as a result of the winter storm in Burnaby and Metro Vancouver that saw more than 20 cm of snow.

As well, there's a risk of freezing rain for overnight into Friday morning, Jan. 19, according to Weatherhood's latest forecast.

The Red Leafs-Nanooks game will now be played tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the West Gym — located at 8888 University Dr.

"Those who purchased tickets for tonight will be refunded," reads a statement from SFU Athletics.

"Admission to Friday's game is free and there will be no concession."

SFU cancelled all in-person activities, classes, labs and university services at each campus earlier today, including Burnaby, as roads work to be cleared and salted by city crews.

A campus update will be provided at 6 a.m. tomorrow, the post-secondary stated. You can check out TransLink's website for bus updates.

The Red Leafs are currently 0-5 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) this year; 2-14 overall. Alaska sits 1-4 in GNAC.

SFU will then play Alaska-Anchorage at home on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 7 p.m.
