COVID-19 means Burnaby roads are much quieter these days. Which means reckless racers are trying to take advantage. Thankfully, Burnaby RCMP are stepping up their traffic enforcement game.

As a newspaper editor working in Burnaby, I try not to get too opinionated about certain capital projects.

A photo came across my social media feeds a few days ago about shopping in Burnaby. The photo was of the Burnaby Costco on Still Creek Road and showed a massive crowd of shoppers lined up in the parking.

It took a while, but Burnaby grocery stores have finally gotten up to speed with COVID-19 precautions.

As editor of a newspaper, I’ve been CC’d on hundreds and hundreds of emails from residents to city governments over the years. They range from complaints about taxes to complaints about potholes to complaints about, well, everything.

The COVID-19 health pandemic has crippled the Canadian economy, putting millions of people out of work and local store owners out of business. The financial implications are far-reaching and will take years to recover from.

The City of Burnaby says it is not currently “considering” automating some of its so-called pedestrian/cyclist “beg buttons” as part of its COVID-19 action plan. I think that’s a mistake.
