One of the most popular stories on the Burnaby NOW website this week was my blog about drivers not clearing their vehicle’s windows. Or the top of their vehicle and all around it. ( You can read that column here.

When you watch as many cooking shows as I do, you get convinced that the best dishes are the most complex. These TV chefs go to incredible hoops to develop “depth of flavour” and put as many bells and whistles into dishes.

“What do we say about somebody who only does the bare minimum?” – line from the move Office Space. That line is supposed to be mocking the person who is saying it, but sometimes it’s useful to shine a light on those who didn’t put in a full effort.

The recent snow has brought a flurry of emails to my inbox. Some people don’t necessarily want me to interview them, they just want to vent about issues because they are frustrated.

The recent snow that turned Metro Vancouver into an outtake from Mad Max: Fury Road without the sunshine produced a lot of rage in people. Folks were fed up seeing drivers racing around Burnaby at unsafe speeds for the icy conditions.

I was eating at one of my favourite restaurants when the server – who knows I work for the NOW – asked me if I heard that Burnaby women were being lured, kidnapped and forced into the sex trade. I had, actually, heard about this.

Burnaby residents slogging through snow can expect a new mix of wintry conditions to deal with after a week of snow. Environment Canada forecasts more snow and strong winds, but also freezing rain. Yep, freezing rain.

One of the greatest parts of growing up in North Burnaby was the rare times it snowed enough to slide down Burnaby Mountain. We would use literally anything we could get our hands on to slide – inflatables, toboggans, chunks of cardboard.

When was the last time you have a craving for fried chicken? For me, I never actually stop craving fried chicken. My body is in an eternal craving mode for crispy, juicy chicken thighs and drumsticks that aren’t greasy.

Burnabarians are breathing a little easier today after surviving a mighty winter storm without having to resort to cannibalism.
