Letter: Stop daycare slated for Burnaby parkland

City-owned property next to Deer Lake would better serve the public as a park, reader says.

Burnaby's mayor and council should reconsider a plan to create a daycare on city-owned land next to Deer Lake Park, a reader says.

Editor: Squandering parkland that is irreplaceable should not be the legacy of this mayor and council. Mayor and council can reconsider all the information and whether it is more logical to keep 4828 Rowan Ave. and 6250 Deer Lake Ave. as an inclusive park for all the people rather than build exclusivity for 74 daycare spots.

The location, which city hall wants to move away from, makes little sense. The proposed Rowan Avenue staff daycare, which has an extravagant $22.5 million budget, a drive-thru driveway and a walled enclosure, will be to the exclusion of all others when it should rightfully be added to the Jewel of Burnaby that is Deer Lake Park.

Daycares can be built anywhere —school playgrounds, the old school board property, etc. City-owned parkland next to Deer Lake is irreplaceable, and it would be irresponsible to waste it on a daycare building.
