Trucking is a problematic industry in B.C., this writer says — and training, absentee ownership and fuel costs are the culprits.

Re: Safety violations in trucks on the road in Burnaby

There are a number of problems in the trucking industry.

First is training: The training is very poor. There are very few good schools that not only teach driving but truck maintenance.

Second, some of the owners are like landlords offshore and don't provide the money to maintain the trucks properly. Poor brakes is the number one problem.

Third is cost of fuel. With all the taxes on fuel and insurance and other government red tape, some truckers have had their cost go up 30 to 40 per cent in the last year. The carbon tax is the worst. That is why food cost are so high.

Note: we get most of our food from the U.S.A. and Alberta, all trucked in.
