Should Burnaby play host to the VanOpen tennis tournament? That question raised some concerns at the city council table, and Burnaby NOW readers are sharing their thoughts.

Should Burnaby play host to the VanOpen tennis tournament?

Organizers of the professional tourney — which boasts alumni such as Bianca Andreescu and Maria Sharapova — have come to Burnaby with a pitch to hold the tournament at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex and Christine Sinclair Community Centre this summer.

An initial pitch to Burnaby city council met with some reluctance, but Burnaby city staff will now study the cost and feasibility of the project and report back to council as soon as possible.

The VanOpen directors said they needed a decision by around mid-February.

In the meantime, we asked you, our readers, what you thought — and so far, we have a couple of short-but-succinct answers in support of the idea:

I believe having the Van Open tennis tournament in Burnaby is an opportunity for Western Canadians to see live tennis where it may not be possible to travel to Quebec or Ontario for the Rogers Cup.

Burnaby should host the VanOpen tennis tournament.
