It’s late at night and I’m sitting on the couch watching my favourite show on Netflix. My three kids have all gone to bed and the house is quiet.

I am an election super-nerd. It’s true. I enjoy elections the same way normal people enjoy, I dunno, going out to clubs or hearing their favourite band play a stadium concert or whatever it is that normal people do for fun.

After engaging in what has effectively been some shadowboxing the past year, the NDP and the B.C. Liberals are about to begin the main bout as the legislature has resumed sitting.

The B.C. legislature was abuzz Monday with the ramifications flowing from the green light that an international consortium is expected to give to a major new B.C. liquefied natural gas plant. And the buzz is spreading everywhere. B.C.

Last Friday, the NOW received an email from the City of Burnaby with a link to its new PSA raising awareness about the civic election on Oct. 20.

Editor : Next month, starting on Oct. 22, B.C. will hold a referendum on electoral reform. I will be voting in support of proportional representation (pro rep) because it would ensure that I get an MLA I want to represent me.

The other day I saw a tweet from someone touting a radio segment dealing with how to ensure that elected representatives reflect the look of your community. It’s a real problem in politics today. Too many civic leaders look old, male and white.

The City of Burnaby forward the NOW a video today that it has produced about the Oct. 20 civic election. The PSA last about 60 seconds and has some soothing, slightly jaunty music to go with a lot of purple backgrounds.

If you haven’t read reporter Kelvin Gawley’s front page story on the Burnaby First Coalition and candidate Heather Leung , I encourage you to read it because it’s an important election topic.

Bake sales, pizza parties, cake walks and hotdog days. These are the go-to fundraising options at most B.C. schools, and some parents aren’t too pleased.
