The name of Kask is a familiar one in Burnaby, and rightly so - it's been part of the fabric of the community for nearly 90 years. Kask Bros., which supplies concrete throughout the Metro Vancouver region, is now a division of Lafarge Canada Inc.

The large Shoppers Drug Mart store at Hastings Street and Gilmore Avenue is closing this week. The Shoppers pharmacy is relocating one block east, to 4114 Hastings St.

Burnaby North Secondary student Jennifer Hao has made a name for herself, volunteering and leading many local initiatives. Her work caught the eye of TD Bank Group, which recently granted her a major scholarship.

Gary Birch, executive director of the Neil Squire Society, was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. The medal was presented at a special ceremony in Vancouver on Wednesday.

Lesley Fox, executive director for the Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals, demonstrates a variety of wildlife traps to grade 10 social studies students at Burnaby Mountain Secondary.

Canadian Blood Services held a donation clinic at Burnaby North Secondary on the Easter long weekend. Only 73 people showed up, which left them 21 short of their 94-donor target.

The date is set for a follow-up to February's successful food swap event in Burnaby. The event will take place on May 1, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Willingdon Community Centre.
